Planning Ahead for Bucket List Travel: An Ideal Timeline

When it comes to securing your ideal itinerary for bucket list travel, it's never been more important to be prepared and plan well in advance. Here’s an ideal timeline we recommend working towards, whether it be for travelling to Africa or any other of our destinations:

‍

2 Years Out: Begin Your Research

The decision has mostly been made and Africa is pencilled into the calendar. To start off, people start scouring the internet and speaking with friends to find out what they should do. This is also, unsurprisingly, when most people get overwhelmed by the wealth of conflicting information and realise they need some help.

‍

For us, this is often when we find people read our free travel guides for inspiration and clarification.

‍

18 Months Out: Get in Touch

We recommend starting to plan a trip at least 18 months in advance as this is when tour and accommodation can start to sell out. It’s a fine line between having confirmed pricing and having availability, so this 18 month mark is a good middle ground between the two.

‍

This also allows time for us to work together and amend your trip to suit you, without any time pressure. If you are planning a group larger than 4 people, add a month for every additional couple.

‍

12-18 Months Out: Book the Trip

At this point ideally your trip is booked (or almost booked) to ensure availability. You’ll only pay a 30% deposit to book it all in, and you have plenty of time to read our suggested books for your destination. Or just watch the suggested films, if that’s easier.

‍

10 Months Out: Flights Booked

Flights become available 9 - 11 months out from departure, depending on what your return flight date is. Securing them early keeps costs down.

‍

1 Month Out: A Special Delivery

We check and confirm and reconfirm and then digitally send out your final documents. But, keep an eye out for something special in the mail from us too. At this point, the excitement is palpable, and your journey is just around the corner.

Why travel with us?

Travel isn’t what is used to be. It used to be undertaken with a sense of adventure and discovery. As the world shrunk, so did our imaginations and over time, manufactured experiences, sponsored travel lists and mass tourism have slowly extinguished that magic. Amazing destinations, catering to the crowds, have become overwhelmed shadows of their former selves.

And so, we established The Explorer Society to be a travel company for like‑minded travellers. It’s for those who travel for the destination and the incredible experiences to be found within, not just for the bragging rights. We are passionate about avoiding the crowds and providing real and revelatory experiences.

Honesty

We always try to maintain as open and honest a conversation with you as we can throughout the entire process. We are happy to chat about what we recommend, why, and why we do what we do.

Do good, be good

The destinations we visit should be around for future generations to enjoy. We want the benefits of your visit go to those in the local area you visited, not some big corporation elsewhere.

Value ≠ Cost

What something costs isn’t the same as what something is worth. We always try to get the best value for your trip, irrespective of how you choose to travel and what budget you have.

Experience first

The experience always comes first. This might mean five‑star luxury, three‑star simplicity or a camp out under millions of stars, whatever ultimately best suits the experience you’re after.

Don’t just take our word for it.

“It’s been five months since our trip and yet the memories are still so vivid that it feels like we just came back yesterday. Honestly, I never imagined, when I first reached out to plan my wife’s 40th birthday, that this would turn into such a life-changing experience.”

Sanjay K

“It was the bespoke adventure of a lifetime covering river, desert, deltas and savannah. We could not have asked for a better introduction to Africa. The experiences far exceeded our expectations.”

Lorraine B

“Honestly, it was an incredible experience from start to finish. Everything ran seamlessly and every detail was covered beautifully. The accommodation and tours you selected were spot on and worked perfectly for us.”

Mark P

“I have to say, the trip was nothing short of amazing and far exceeded our expectations. We honestly can’t thank you enough for making this dream trip with my mum a reality, and for curating such a breathtaking experience.”

Jacqui B

“I was absolutely blown away with the people and the places we experienced and I cannot wait to get back over there. Thank you so much for organising such an amazing trip, it will be really hard to top this one that's for sure.”
