Inspiring Places to Spend New Years, Next Year

New year, new places to explore. In fact, what better time to travel than around New Years? We’ve picked some of our favourite places where you can ring in the new year, next year, and make it one to remember.

Inspiring Places to Spend New Years, Next Year

There is something about the arrival of a new year that brings in a sense of possibility, or of time slipping past our fingers. Every year, around New Years Eve, we always have people contact us about items on their bucket list, entrusting us with long held travel dreams. Our job is to make them real. If you have dreams of exploring the world, we can make it happen for you as well!

Watch the Fireworks in the Atacama Desert, Northern Chile

New Years Eve is best known as a time for elaborate fireworks displays and explosions across the starry sky. But, if you tire of the crowds that accompany it or prefer something a bit less passive than watching on TV, what can be more impressive than nature’s fireworks? That’s right: we are talking about space. Every night there are distant explosions and hunks of space rock igniting our atmosphere.

There are a few places to best witness this cosmic fireworks show, and the Atacama desert in northern Chile is one of the best. Not only does it give you a nearly unrivalled glimpse into the universe above, but after a late night of celebrations the nearby health spas can help you begin the New Year in a better state of health. Days spent in bliss, evenings spent in the heavens? Perfection.

Stay up late in Antarctica

There are two ways to stay up all night. One is to brute force your way past the nighttime and resist the bodily urge to go to sleep. The other easier way is to go to a place like Antarctica where it won’t get dark and you have endless daylight to celebrate. When New Years Eve rolls about, enjoy your endless celebration amongst the icebergs and epic glaciers. As a bonus, the penguins have already worn their tuxedos and are ready to go. When midnight strikes, the sun is still shining. May that occurrence remind you that time is a human invention and what you choose to do with your time is more important than the passage of it.

Party with gorillas in the Congo

If you prefer to spend your New Years celebration in raucous company, perhaps you might like to ring it in with some real party animals. They hoot, they holler, they fill up the jungles of the Congo. From western lowland gorillas to bongos, chimpanzees, forest elephants and giant hogs these forests are full of people who like to make some noise. Whether staying in a remote lodge or sailing peacefully down the Congo river, these wild partygoers will be the life of any party.

Don’t get too caught in a conversation with the African Grey parrots, those clever ones will talk your ear off.

Gastronomy in the winelands of Africa and South America

Perhaps for you New Years is a time to let loose a little. It’s a time to enjoy the finest wine and food in great volume, all before the diet begins proper the following day. And what better place than in the famed winelands of South Africa and South America. From the Cape Winelands (in South Africa) to the famed wineland regions of Maipo or Mendoza (in Chile and Argentina), there is a wealth of gastronomic delights for those looking to celebrate. Pinotage, Carmenere and Malbec all begged to be sampled, nestled alongside fresh produce and fine chocolate or charcuterie (also known as picada or pichanga in South America). No matter which one you choose, each has stunning scenery nestled in amongst mountain ranges and provides a respite from the outside world.

Romance in Buenos Aires, Argentina

There is nothing quite like a bit of romance to celebrate New Years. In fact, September is the most popular birth month in the US, the UK and in Australia. Make of that what you will. Whether it is a standalone trip or part of a larger Antarctic/South American journey, no trip to the region is complete without a little Buenos Aires fire. And if you are looking to celebrate New Years Eve with a bit of romance, head to the steamy tango clubs of Buenos Aires to see the passions of the national dance. An evening of incredible dancing, great gastronomy and a well dressed audience will be enough to put anyone in the right mood for a celebratory kiss (or two).

New Years Resolutions

Why not welcome in the New Year by also closing off resolutions from the previous year? If Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, a safari, or Antarctica has been on your list for years, this is a brilliant moment to turn it into a real plan. We have treks up Kilimanjaro, the remote Rwenzori, Aconcagua, even much further afield. That way when you celebrate your achievement at the top of the world, those celebrations have been hard earned.

We are here to make resolutions, and dreams, come true. May your 2026 and beyond be filled with adventure.

Why travel with us?

Travel isn’t what is used to be. It used to be undertaken with a sense of adventure and discovery. As the world shrunk, so did our imaginations and over time, manufactured experiences, sponsored travel lists and mass tourism have slowly extinguished that magic. Amazing destinations, catering to the crowds, have become overwhelmed shadows of their former selves.

And so, we established The Explorer Society to be a travel company for like‑minded travellers. It’s for those who travel for the destination and the incredible experiences to be found within, not just for the bragging rights. We are passionate about avoiding the crowds and providing real and revelatory experiences.

Honesty

We always try to maintain as open and honest a conversation with you as we can throughout the entire process. We are happy to chat about what we recommend, why, and why we do what we do.

Do good, be good

The destinations we visit should be around for future generations to enjoy. We want the benefits of your visit go to those in the local area you visited, not some big corporation elsewhere.

Value ≠ Cost

What something costs isn’t the same as what something is worth. We always try to get the best value for your trip, irrespective of how you choose to travel and what budget you have.

Experience first

The experience always comes first. This might mean five‑star luxury, three‑star simplicity or a camp out under millions of stars, whatever ultimately best suits the experience you’re after.

Don’t just take our word for it.

“I would recommend The Explorer Society every time.”

Derelle B

Poppy M
