A South American Extension to an Antarctic Expedition

South America is filled with amazing natural and cultural discoveries. For our travellers also exploring Antarctica, you’ll be stopping in Argentina or Chile anyway, so why not take a moment to explore while you have the chance?

A South American Extension to an Antarctic Expedition

South America is a fascinating continent, filled with amazing natural and cultural discoveries. For our travellers also exploring Antarctica, it can be a great excuse to also visit a few spots along the way. After all, you will be stopping in Argentina or Chile anyway, and after the long flight why not take the time to recover in style (or in solitude, if that’s your preference).

With that in mind, we gathered together some of the team to find out their recommendations for best things to do in South America.

Top Picks

The Pantanal and Bonito, Brazil

"Anyone visiting South America should make time for the Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland—roughly the size of the UK—spanning over 150,000 square kilometers across Brazil, with extensions into Bolivia and Paraguay. Its seasonally flooded landscape supports an exceptional concentration of wildlife, making sightings far more reliable than in denser regions like the Amazon, with frequent encounters with jaguars, caimans, capybaras, giant otters, and vibrant birdlife.

"To round out the experience, pair it with a few days in nearby Bonito, known for its crystal-clear rivers, caves, and waterfalls, where water-based adventures like snorkelling and floating among colourful fish offer a striking contrast to the Pantanal’s wildlife-rich plains." – Marcus

Remote Peru

"For those looking to go beyond the classics, the Chachapoyas region in northern Peru is a true hidden gem, home to the impressive Kuélap fortress, lush cloud forests, and the spectacular Gocta Waterfall. For those who want a meaningful experience in their trip, I’d recommend a full-day visit to a local community in Lamay, in the Sacred Valley. It’s a great experience to connect with Andean culture, learn about traditional lifestyles, and contribute to the community’s sustainable development." – Patricia

Ancient Incans

"There is nothing quite like Machu Picchu. Iconic for a reason, this epic mountain fortress is shrouded with clouds and mystery, and visiting the site is a memorable high point of any Peruvian adventure. Combined with the history of Cusco and other sites in the Sacred Valley, it’s a lovely way to experience the history of the region. Or, for more adventurous travelers, the trek to Choquequirao is a fantastic alternative to Machu Picchu. It’s far less visited and offering a real sense of exploration in the Andes." – Martin

New discoveries

Explora El Chaltén Lodge, Argentinean Patagonia

"A refuge amid the remote and untamed beauty of Patagonia, Explora El Chaltén acts as the perfect launchpad for your adventures. At your doorstep you have Los Glaciares National Park: on expertly guided experiences you can enjoy its world-renowned trails and kayak along its glacial rivers. Or simply take in its natural beauty from the comfort of the the beautiful lodge, having a drink whilst overlooking panoramic mountain views. After a day of breathtaking outdoor exploration, you can unwind in one of the lodge’s many reading rooms, terraces or cozy common spaces next to the fireplace. The gourmet restaurant serves locally inspired cuisine paired with curated regional wine for the perfect all-inclusive meal after relaxing in the sauna or open-air hot tub." – Bella

The Southernmost tip of the World

"Reaching Puerto Williams on Navarino Island in Chile it is only the beginning of the experience itself. Whether you arrive by air over the vast Patagonian channels, or navigate the legendary Beagle Channel, every route is defined by the majesty of nature. The experience down here is vast. There are unforgettable treks, sailing expeditions through untouched landscapes, horseback rides with local gauchos and true immersion in the strong cultural legacy of the Yaghanes at the Martin Gusinde Museum. I personally think to capture this once-in-a-lifetime experience, the Errante Lodge stands as the best place to stay." – Cris

Explorer favourites

Bartolomé Island, Galápagos

"For me, one of the true highlights is Bartolomé Island in the Galápagos. The views are absolutely stunning, the ocean is so incredibly beautiful, and I even saw penguins and swam with them without having to go far at all. It’s such a unique, unexpected experience, and honestly, that’s why I love it so much!

"On the mainland, Cuenca offers a completely different charm, with its colonial architecture, relaxed atmosphere, and strong cultural identity. Just nearby, the artisan town of Chordeleg is also a must, especially for its jewelry. Wandering through its small shops and discovering beautifully handcrafted pieces feels genuinely magical and gives you a real connection to local traditions." – Paula

Culinary scene of Argentina

"Thank heavens my first stay in Buenos Aires towards the end of my visit my trip. Had I stayed longer, I don’t think any of my clothes would have fit. The tango and history and style of Buenos Aires is undeniable, but you can’t leave without experiencing the food scene in Buenos Aires. whether it’s a traditional asado or a more intimate culinary experience like Fogón Asado, there is amazing food at every turn. My recommendation is to hit the San Telmo markets for a custom Choripan, and some empanadas (and media lune and alfajores) to go." – Cam

Why travel with us?

Travel isn’t what is used to be. It used to be undertaken with a sense of adventure and discovery. As the world shrunk, so did our imaginations and over time, manufactured experiences, sponsored travel lists and mass tourism have slowly extinguished that magic. Amazing destinations, catering to the crowds, have become overwhelmed shadows of their former selves.

And so, we established The Explorer Society to be a travel company for like‑minded travellers. It’s for those who travel for the destination and the incredible experiences to be found within, not just for the bragging rights. We are passionate about avoiding the crowds and providing real and revelatory experiences.

Do good, be good

The destinations we visit should be around for future generations to enjoy. We want the benefits of your visit go to those in the local area you visited, not some big corporation elsewhere.

Value ≠ Cost

What something costs isn’t the same as what something is worth. We always try to get the best value for your trip, irrespective of how you choose to travel and what budget you have.

Experience first

The experience always comes first. This might mean five‑star luxury, three‑star simplicity or a camp out under millions of stars, whatever ultimately best suits the experience you’re after.
