Top locations

Brazil is a mixing pot of cultural influences and natural wonders, from the rich depths of the Amazon rainforest to the vibrancy of Rio de Janeiro. It is South America’s largest country and one of the largest in the world. Exuding a colourful atmosphere, Brazil offers visitors a range of experiences to choose from. Travellers can relax on the many peaceful beaches that run down the lengthy coastline or instead party hard during Carnival. Others may be drawn to the crashing waters of Iguazu Falls whilst others drift languidly down the Amazon or through the Pantanal. With a country this large and diverse, there is something to be enjoyed by every explorer. Brazil is often combined with Argentina, especially if you plan on visiting Iguazu Falls. You can also easily enjoy it by itself as the sole destination.

The road network is largely ok in Brazil for road-based travel. However, given the large size of the country, at The Explorer Society most trips tend to combine short air travel for more time at the destination.

The most famous city in Brazil (but not the capital), Rio is the thriving heart of the country and a great encapsulation of all things Brazil. Take in the sights from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, including the famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, before heading to the top of Corcovado for a close encounter with the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Rio de Janeiro

One of the world’s greatest waterfalls and one of the highlights of South America, Iguazu Falls must be experienced to be appreciated fully. A chain of waterfalls stretching over 3km between the Brazilian and Argentinian borders, this epic monument to nature has earned its reputation as one of the world’s great wonders.

Iguazu Falls

The world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon is home to an estimated 10% of the world’s biodiversity and millions of animals and plants unique to this area. This immense natural wilderness spreads over nine countries with one of the longest rivers in the world, the Amazon River, winding through the very heart.

Pantanal

Pantanal Wonders

Often overshadowed by the famous Amazon rainforest, the Pantanal is the world’s largest tropical wetland and is also home to immense amounts of biodiversity. This treat for nature lovers is also home to a large population of jaguars, caimans and other iconic animals and is one of the best wildlife spotting regions on the continent.

Salvador

Salvador

The first city of what we now know to be Brazil, Salvador is famed for the stunning pastel buildings and cobblestone streets that make up the historic quarter and the Afro-Brazilian culture that first emerged from here. If the atmosphere of arguably the largest Carnival in Brazil doesn’t tempt you, head further into the Bahia province to relax in the sleepy coastal towns of the area, like Arembepe.

Ouro Preto

Ouro Preto

Although well visited, the colonial town of Ouro Preto is not often well known to travellers before they head there. A former mining centre, this city is home to a beautifully preserved slice of colonial architecture and old-world charm. Steep cobblestone streets and stunning views over the many old churches and buildings reward those who make the effort.

When to go

At The Explorer Society we firmly believe that there is no right or wrong time to go anywhere.
Instead, we think that each time of the year offers different experiences that better suit different travellers.
After all, high and low season often refers to the amount of travellers present, not whether something is ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

Being a large country Brazil has distinct climates depending on which part of the country you are in. In general, it is warm year round with the exception of the south of the country which can be quite cool in winter. Inversely, the north of the country alternates between mostly wet and dry conditions.

This time of the year is the Brazilian summer, meaning generally warm days and dry conditions. The exception is the wetter conditions in the Amazon and Pantanal. Towards the end of this period is usually the Carnival celebrations across the country. This is the high season for travel across South America with increased crowds of local and international visitors.

Temperatures start to drop and conditions become a little cooler across the country. As it approaches winter the chances of rain increase. Depending on Easter, Carnival celebrations may be in progress around the beginning of this period.
July to September

Winter means a cooler climate to travel in and tourism numbers will generally decrease during this time. In the Pantanal, the dry season means a great chance of spotting both birds and other animals (like jaguars). Rio is also much cooler to visit.

With summer approaching the temperature will start to rise. Rain is on the increase in some areas, with tourist numbers slowly rising as well.

How long do I need?

Brazil is so large and so rich of experiences that you will need years to explore it all fully. You will have to make decisions to decide what you are willing to undertake. You’ll struggle to see much apart else than two destinations in less than 10 days. Even though you’ll see more in two weeks, you won’t see everything. If you are visiting other countries then a minimum of a little over two weeks is quite common. If you add up your destinations and add four or more days for each, you’ll get a rough timeline.

Everyone is different, so please note that these guidelines are general in nature.
Ultimately it will depend on your own expedition’s requirements.

Our planning process

Planning travel should be exciting, but it can be exhausting. There is so much information and so little clarity, you often end up more confused than when you began.

Sometimes it’s simple and easy to figure out. Sometimes it means asking you more questions and diving deep into your motivations.
