Top locations

Oman offers its visitors a chance to explore a laid back and stunningly beautiful Arabian paradise. From its ancient mosques to its incredible sandy beaches and pristine dive sites, Oman has an otherworldliness that surprises even the most informed traveller. It is a country where the sandy dunes meet the crystal blue waters. It’s where the modern Arabian world meets an exotic history. Oman is often a singular destination for travellers but is sometimes combined with other Middle Eastern destinations such as Egypt and Jordan for a longer break.

The road network is good in Oman. With most destinations within a few hours’ drive of Muscat, travel by vehicle is the most common way to get around. A 4×4 vehicle is necessary for some mountain peaks and valleys as well as the Sharqiya Sands.

The capital city Muscat has a real sense of Arabian authenticity to it, especially compared to nearby neighbouring cities in the U.A.E., Dubai and Abu Dhabi. This seaside city is perfectly placed for coastal action and desert adventures as well as wonderful shopping at the lively souks. Take an evening stroll along the Corniche after a day exploring the city, including the stunning Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.

Muscat

The former ship building hub for early Oman, Sur has a wealth of activities within easy driving distance. The most popular would be the Raz al Jinz Turtle Reserve, the easternmost point of the Arabian Peninsula and hatching point for the endangered green turtle. Most visitors enjoy the highlights here whilst driving from Muscat to Sur.

Sur

The trading hub of Nizwa is famous for the dramatic construction that gives this area a sense of history, from the UNESCO listed irrigation area of Falaj Daris, the Bahla Fort and the haunting ruins of Tanuf to the nearby Jabreen Castle. Nizwa is often used as the base for Jebel Akhdar or Jebel Shams.

Hidden gems

Jebel Shams

Wadi Ghul & Jebel Shams

Jebel Shams is the tallest mountain in Oman, also known as the ‘Mountain of the Sun’. With the use of a 4×4 vehicle you can drive to the summit for some incredible views with one of them being of the nearby Wadi Ghul, sometimes known as the ‘Omani Grand Canyon’.

Musandam

Musandam Magic

An enclave of Oman separated from the rest of the country by the U.A.E., Musandam is a beautifully stunning area for those travellers willing to make the effort to get there. It is sometimes known as the Norway of Arabia, with epic khors and emerald waters dazzling any visitors and with a peaceful atmosphere seeming a world away from everything.

Sharqiya sands

Shifting Sharqiya Sands

This desert seascape is made up of the ever-moving dunes, some almost 100m tall, making permanent roads impossible and giving it an otherworldly feel. Spend time with the local Bedouin people that call this area home and enjoy the pure night sky with zero light pollution.

When to go

At The Explorer Society we firmly believe that there is no right or wrong time to go anywhere.
Instead, we think that each time of the year offers different experiences that better suit different travellers.
After all, high and low season often refers to the amount of travellers present, not whether something is ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

Oman is great to visit year-round with mostly sunny days at any time of the year. However, during the summer months of June to August temperatures spike. It can be extremely warm with many destinations essentially hibernating. Either side of the summer peak sees the most visitors with October to April. This is popular for the weather and to tie in with turtle hatching in Ras al Jinz.

Ramadan is usually in April or May. It sees most restaurants and stores operate on reduced hours as they undergo a fast from sunrise to sunset. There can be some minor disruption to your schedule. It does, however, allow a chance to take part in an incredible cultural experience.

How long do I need?

You need a minimum of seven nights to travel around Oman. 10 days would allow a more in-depth look as well as allowing some rest from the midday heat. The team at The Explorer Society believe that slowing down to appreciate the destination is best. This is, of course, provided you aren’t sacrificing the trip quality in order to prolong its length. We also understand that everyone is different so these guidelines are general in nature. Ultimately it will depend on your own expedition’s requirements.

Our planning process

Planning travel should be exciting, but it can be exhausting. There is so much information and so little clarity, you often end up more confused than when you began.
